We get a lot of questions about metal roofs in our line of business, so we decided to pull together a list of our most frequently asked questions and supply you with the answers!

Will Metal Roofing Rust?

The short answer is no and yes. Aluminum roofing never rusts, but steel roofing can. If you live in a coastal area or by a large body of water, you may want to invest in an aluminum roof. Most steel roofs are coated in an anti-rust coating, but if they are scratched, rust can start in the exposed areas of your metal roof. Tight bends in the metal can also cause rust as moisture gets trapped in the area and wears away the protective coating.

To avoid rust, you should use a steel alloy with a high zinc content because zinc is corrosion resistant!

Will my Metal Roof Interfere with Wi-Fi or Cell Phone Reception?

Nope! As long as you had a good signal to start with, there should be no interference at all with cell-phone or Wi-Fi reception. If you already had a very weak signal, any extra layer may cause some interference. If you experience a loss of reception, we suggest investing in a signal booster. Most grocery stores and many other businesses have metal roofs and experience no reception issues.

Do Metal Roofs Fade?

Some metal roofs do fade, but usually over the course of decades of wear. High-quality metal roofs are coated with PVDF or other anti-fading and chalking compounds to prevent discoloration and wear. As long as you choose a high-quality roofing material and use a good coating, your roof should not fade.

Can You Walk on a Metal Roof?

Depending on how steep your roof pitch is and the weather conditions, you should be able to walk on your metal roof. If it’s a very steep roof or it has recently snowed or been raining, we do not suggest getting on the roof – metal becomes very slippery when wet. Be careful to walk around the edges and along supported seams when possible, because it is possible to dent your metal roof. And always check your manufacturer’s warranty before getting on the roof, because cleaning or repairing it in a non-recommended way can invalidate your warranty completely. It’s safest to call a professional if you want to have your roof inspected or repaired.

Can I Install my Own Metal Roof?

Some metal roofing – like for sheds and other small, non-residential structures – is DIY friendly. However, metal roofing on a residential home takes specialty equipment and training and is very difficult to install on your own if you don’t have construction experience. Improper installation can damage your roof, endanger your home, and invalidate your roof’s warranty – so think carefully before attempting to install it yourself. Are Metal Roofs Loud When it Rains?

This is a common myth about metal roofs leftover from the days of corrugated tin roofs on shanty houses and agricultural buildings. With the insulation that’s installed in residential projects nowadays, most of the extra rain noise will be dispersed or muffled by the time it reaches the house. Some people are surprised – even disappointed! – with how quiet their metal roofs actually are.
