Congratulations! If you’re reading this, it’s likely because you’ve made up your mind to go with a metal roof – an excellent long-term decision for your home and your wallet. But now that you’ve made the leap, there’s still one important decision left to make. What color you want your roof to be!

This can feel like a simple question, but the customization options for metal roofs are pretty much endless, which can be a little overwhelming. To help you avoid decision fatigue, we’ve pulled together this handy guide for choosing the perfect color for your new metal roof! Be sure to read through this list before you make a final decision!

Be Practical

We would never try to curb your style! As far as color goes, we think you should be free to live your best life. But to get the most out of your metal roof, you want to be sure you choose a paint that’s formulated to stand up to the sun and the elements. There are so many types of paint – be sure that you specifically look for one that is resistant to ultraviolet light.

Gutter with icicle

While this may limit your color pallette a little depending on the manufacturer you choose, in the long run, you’ll be thankful when you don’t have to refinish your roof due to fading and discoloration. Save yourself the time and money a second paint job would cost you and shop for utility first!

Consider Curb Appeal

If you’re not planning to sell this house, go wild! The only thing holding you back is your imagination. You can choose from matte finishes, metallic sheens, dramatic patterns, mix and match colors – the sky is the limit! Dramatic color choices can really set your home apart and set off your landscaping.

But if this isn’t your forever home or you might end up having to move in the next five to ten years, it’s important to consider the tastes of future buyers as well. Does the color match the siding and the shutters? Does it clash with the style of the neighborhood? Red, blue, and green are our most common and popular choices! But as long as you choose something classic and that complements your home, you should be fine.

Think Long Term

If you choose the right paint, you won’t have to have the color touched up for years to come, which keeps your costs and your maintenance efforts low. Bold, bright colors are striking and fun, but they’re more likely to fade noticeably over the years. And ten years is a long time to have a lime green roof! If you’re positive you’ll love it, go for it. But make sure you’re choosing a color that you love, not one that’s just trendy.

Check It Twice

There’s nothing worse than buyer’s remorse – especially when you have to look at it every day! Colors change in different lighting, and the lighting on your roof will change throughout the day as well as from season to season. So make sure that you look at your color samples under a few different lightsources before you make a final decision. We suggest looking at it outside in a few different conditions. If you live somewhere sunny, make sure you’re looking at it in bright light. Likewise, if you live somewhere it rains all the time, you should make sure you see the paint samples under overcast light.

We want you to make an informed decision when you’re choosing a color for your metal roof because we want you to enjoy it for years to come.
